BEAUMONT - By Justin Hinton, KFDM News

Law enforcement officers are looking for a sex offender who walked out of the Beaumont Treatment Center located in the 2300 block of Gulf Street Thursday afternoon.

A spokesperson for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice told KFDM News Kent Lawrence Hughes, 50, cut his electronic monitor around 5:30 p.m. Thursday. He says he then walked out and has not returned.

Hughes was first convicted in 1984. He has been charged with
kidnapping, burglary of a vehicle, burglary of a habitation and possession of a controlled substance in a penal institution.

The Texas Department of Criminal Justice sent Hughes to the halfway house in February of last year.

His parole requires him to remain under state supervision until 2047.

Some residents living near the halfway house say they are slightly concerned with Hughes escape. Others say it's at the back of their minds.

Samuel McCauley said hes not too worried about living near a halfway house.

If you had more and more people escaping, and they were walking through the neighborhood, then I'd probably be more motivated, but right now, nothing's happened so far to warn me of possibilities that things may happen, so I'm comfortable where I'm at, he said.

If you know where Hughes may be located contact Beaumont Crime Stoppers at 833-TIPS.Search for sex offender
