GED test gets a makeover

VIDOR - By Justin Hinton, KFDM News

A new GED test will make its debut in 2014 that will be even harder than the current one says Allie Callahan, the Chief GED Examiner at the Aim Center High School testing location.

She says part of the change is to better prepare the work force for potential employers.

They expect them to be able to communicate, write, do the math involved that the job requires, she said.

Callahan does not get to look at the test and does not know what exactly the new test will contain.

Currently individuals are tested on five sections -- math, science, social studies, writing and reading. Starting next year, there will be four areas -- literacy, mathematics, science, and social studies.

Test takers will have three opportunities to pass all five sections in a one-year period.

In previous years, scores could carry over, but the new test does not allow for that option.

Aneisha Sezar, 22, says shes not worried about the new test. She plans to pass it the first time, despite having to face her nemesis.

Math. Yeah, Math has always been kind of hard for me in school, but I think I studied enough and prayed enough, she said.

Sezar dropped out of high school her sophomore year. She says she tried to step into adulthood a little too soon and now wishes shed listened to her Mom and Dad and offered advice to current students thinking about dropping out.

Stay home because what's in the world is going to be here whenever you get grown, she said. It's still gonna be here, so don't settle for less. Just keep pushing forth your goals and be the best that you can be, because it's hard out here.

Sezar is using her second chance to set things right and hopes to become a phlebotomist.
