Despite size, some small colleges have large-scale security measures

PORT ARTHUR-By: Leslie Rangel

A recent increase in school shootings has prompted many school districts, universities and colleges, no matter how small or large, to put security measures in place during emergencies.

Lamar State College Port Arthur administrators say despite the small size of their campus, they have large measures that rival large universities.

The students government president says the guards are often seen riding around campus, but it doesn't stop there.

Jaciel Lozoya says, "They're definitely friendly and hold a conversation with you any day, any time."

DeBose Thompson, campus security coordinator says the students are security's biggest help.

"We all become each other's eyes," Thompson says.

He says he patrols the whole campus on foot, changing routes daily.

Thompson tells KFDM News there are 12 emergency phones located throughout the campus grounds.

"You can just go there and press the button that somebody is going to answer on the other end or call 911," Thompson said.

The school president says security is not an issue, making security a high priority.
