City of Beaumont approves possible demolition of unsafe buildings

BEAUMONT- by Leslie Rangel

The Beaumont City Council approved 50 buildings on a list for possible demolitions calling them "unsafe substandard structures."

Some Beaumont community members say they want the city to do something about the buildings now, instead of waiting years to bring them down.

Shantell Cannon lives next to an abandoned home, she says it's a breeding ground for unwanted guests.

"There was a homeless person coming in an out at one time, so that's your biggest concern, but predators like racoons are scary too and possums," Cannon tells KFDM News.

The empty homes are not only problems for neighbors, but also for police.

"You'll see that people have taken up residence to some degree, you'll see that people have made beds in some of these homes you know we get calls on these all the time," Sgt. Rob Flores of Beaumont Police Department says.

Some homes are abandoned, some have fallen to fires, but police say any type of shelter could attract criminals. Police and neighbors argree the homes must go.

"It'll get that haven for criminals out of the neighboorhood," Flores says.

Cannon tells us she is worried, "It may not just be a homless person it could be an addict and you never know just what to expect."

Community members say they just want to get rid of the eye sores and have a safe neighboorhood for everyone.

The city ordered the unsafe structures must be removed within 10 days or the property owner must enroll the dangerous structure in a work program.
