Southeast Texans honor Dr. Martin Luther King Junior

PORT ARTHUR-By: Leslie Rangel

The 3rd Monday in January marks the national recognition of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Fifty years ago, Dr. King delivered his 'I Have a Dream' speech. Fifty years later, men and women gathered at the Bob Bowers Civic Center in Port Arthur for the MLK Brunch to honor his legacy.

Attendees say they remember when water fountains were still separate during segregation.

"I used to say, 'I don't want to drink no more colored water, I want some white water' and I didn't really know what that meant, I just thought the water was different colors," Earline Thomas tells KFDM news.

The brunch celebration had songs adn speeches recognizing Dr. King's accomplishments.

The Savoy family of Port Arthur says they started the brunch after Coretta Scott King asked one of their family members to start a support group to keep Dr. King's dream alive.

Terry Savoy Hadley, they MLK support group vice president says her family helped grow the celebration that now includes thousands of people.

They say it's important to honor Dr. King and his message to keep the country moving forward.
