Community honors King through parade

BEAUMONT - By JUSTIN HINTON

Hundreds of people met in Beaumont to honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr’s legacy at the annual MLK Parade, 50 years after his famous “I Have a Dream” speech.

Parents came out in full force with their children, hoping they understood the true meaning of the celebration.

“That's all we need them to know,” Amy Torres said. “Why we're doing it is more important than doing it.”

Rena Brooks brought her 15-month-old daughter to the parade. Even though she’s too young to understand the significance right now, her mother hopes she’ll in a few years.

“I figure when she gets a little older, where she’s able to understand some things, that we’re able to better her life or herself in the future,” she said.

Robin Mayfield came to the parade two months after undergoing knee replacement surgery.

“I’m still here, because I believe in Martin Luther King,” Mayfield said.
