Kelly High School students react to gun control proposals

BEAUMONT-By: Leslie Rangel

Wednesday morning, students from Kelly High School took time out of lectures to hear what the President had to say about gun control.

Some students from the school's debate team say the proposal will make schools safer but the changes will affect many Americans including students.

President Obama has started the process by signing 23 executive orders, but he also wants Congress to get involved.

The President thinks Congress needs to require universal background checks for anyone who buys a gun, as well as banning military style assault weapons and limiting 10 round magazine clips.

"The issue with the large clip and that they can put so many rounds within a short amount of time, is that doesn't necessarily need to be within the hands of people," Junior Kyle Reid told KFDM News.

Many people in the nation disagree. They believe the President's orders will erode the 2nd Ammendment, but students think the plan will help.

"I just try to live my life normally, but I feel like passing this legislation will prevent the one school or town that it's going to happen next," Junior Thomas Flanagan said.

Flanagan's classmate agrees with the President's orders.

"I think with the regulations regarding mental health procedures and emergency procedures, I'd say I feel safer," Thomas Wadill, a sophomore at Kelly High School says.

They say the feeling of safety is not the same a feeling of ease.

"People are afraid, I mean the result of Sandy Hook, if nothing else, is that people are afraid and more cognizant of this gun control issue. Either you're afraid for your life or afraid for your liberties," Senior Ethan Hinds said.
