Former judge pleads guilty to theft

LAKE CHARLES (AP) -- A former state court judge has pleaded guilty to two counts of theft in 14th Judicial District Court.

The American Press reports 62-year-old Greg Lyons of Lake Charles faced 13 counts, but pleaded guilty Friday to two counts of theft over $500 and was sentenced to five years' probation and ordered to pay $192,000 in restitution.

Lyons was also ordered to get treatment for a gambling addiction. He served as judge for 18 years before returning to private practice in 2001.

He has five years to repay the money, although both Judge Clayton Davis and prosecutors said they wanted to see good-faith efforts to repay the money.
