Sales tax revenue increases dramatically in Jefferson County, cities

Southeast Texas cities and counties are reaping the benefits of an improving economy in the state.


According to information KFDM News has obtained from the Texas Comptroller's Office, sales tax payments have increased dramatically.


In Beaumont, the state sent a sales tax payment to the city of nearly $4 million in January, an increase of more than 50 percent compared to January of last year.


In Port Arthur, sales tax payments were about $2.2 million, up 85 percent.


Payments to Jefferson County cities added up to nearly $6.8 million in January, an increase of nearly 58 percent.


Sales tax payments in Hardin County were about $540,000, an increase of about 14 percent.


The state sent sales tax payments to Orange County of about $675,000, up about 2.4 percent.
