City council decides fate of Melton center

BEAUMONT - By Justin Hinton, KFDM News

Beaumont City Council members discussed the fate of the L.L. Melton Family Life Center on Sarah Street in Beaumont during their meeting.

The people who oversee the center say they can’t afford the utility bills and say unless the city steps in, it will close.

“It could be a building empty with nothing going on here and vandals breaking in and stealing things, just tearing it up, or we can all come together bringing whatever we have and making it flourish,” Cheryl Guidry, the director of the center said.

She took over the center after the Y.M.C.A.  housed in the facility shut down.

During the one hour, heated discussion, Councilman Michael Getz questioned whether the Melton center was even needed.

“If there is not a need, and I haven’t been convinced that there is a need opposed to a want, then the obvious answer would be to sell that facility,” he said.

Jamie Smith, a long-time supporter of the center thinks otherwise.

“I think it's a good cause, a good way to stop the pipeline to prison with minority kids,” he said.
