Butch Hoffer closes after 75 years

BEAUMONT - By Justin Hinton, KFDM News

Butch Hoffer clothing store is officially closed after 75 years of business.

“We’re proud of what we’ve accomplished and we’re proud of the day this has become,” Lewis Hoffer, the store’s owner and son of its founder said.

Dozens of friends, family members, customers and employees packed the store for its final hours, celebrating and reminiscing over their time spent at the store.

“I worked with Butch downtown in 1952, 1953. I was a part-time worker like a lot of the kids at Lamar were,” H.K. Pitts said.

“He always treated all the employees like they were family members,” Erica Babino said. “I even babysat his kids. He and Marsha, they'll always be special to me.”

Babino worked at Butch Hoffer during her four years at Lamar. She said she learned many things from the store and its owners.

The first location of the store opened in downtown Beaumont in 1937.

Jerry Nathan was the store’s first customer and became the last, ceremonially speaking, by purchasing several items for one dollar.

Hoffer says he looks forward to traveling, hunting for things to do and fishing for new ideas.
