Port Neches City Hall moves

PORT NECHES - By Justin Hinton, KFDM News

Port Neches City Hall has moved to its new location on 1005 Merriman Street, down the street from its old location.

“We think that the building is sized to meet the long-term needs of the community,” City Manager Andre Wimer said.

The new building cost about $4 million.

Wimer says city council members started looking for grant money after Hurricane Rita.

Seven years later, a moving notice left on the door indicates they found the money. Two federal grants provided just over half the total cost – The Port Security Grant and the Hazardous Mitigation Grant.

Wimer says the new building contains 4,000 more square feet of space, leaving room to grow.

Unlike the old city hall, the new building is designed to handle emergencies.

“Because it is an emergency operation center,” Wimer said. “We will have the ability to dispatch police and fire.”

Wimer also says the new city hall is safer.

“It's rated for 150 mile per hour wind, there's storm shutters on all the windows, and it is elevated, so structurally, we anticipate this building to be here for a long time,” he said.

The elevation also means individuals who want to pay bills at the drive-up window will have to use a system similar to the one at banks.

The new city hall is open to the public.

The city will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Thursday, January 10 at 2 p.m. A reception will follow. That day will also be the first time city council will meet in the new space.Port Neches City Hall moves
