Volunteers help people in need on this New Year's Day

PORT ARTHUR-By: Leslie Rangel

While you were spending time inside with family for New Years, others were volunteering to make sure Southeast Texans had a chance to enjoy a warm meal on a cold day.

Tuesday's lunch began with prayers and giving thanks. It's a tradition for the men and women who live at the O.W. Collins Apartments in Port Arthur.

Sharing and Carring Ministries is serving sausage and chicken gumbo.

"We're doing Missionary work, for God. We have to feed his servants and that's why we're here." Michael Navey, a volunteer with Sharing and Caring Ministries said.

It's not only food the volunteers are serving, they are also sharing time and even giving free haircuts.

"I'm grateful and I'm glad they still got people like that to do it because it's hard to find people that take time out of their day to come do this so I'm grateful and I appreciate it," James Brown a tenant says.
