Fire heavily damages home turned apartment complex

BEAUMONT - BY SCOTT LAWRENCE:

Families have safely escaped a fire that destroyed a home turned into apartments in south Beaumont, according to the Beaumont Fire Department.

Stay with KFDM and kfdm.com for updates.

The fire was reported at about 7 a.m. Thursday at a multiple family dwelling at 4540 Highland Avenue, near South Park Middle School.

The roof collapsed while firefighters were putting out the flames.

Everyone had safely escaped and no one was hurt.

The fire isn't affecting the school.

BEAUMONT - From Beaumont Fire Department - The first engine arrived at 7:12 and found a large dwelling heavily involved with fire. Due to the large structure and heavy volume of fire, a second alarm was called for at 7:22 to bring additional units and firefighters to the scene. It took over an hour for firefighters to control the fire. All occupants were able to escape without injury. South Park Middle School provided a room for the occupants to get out of the weather and Red Cross was called to the scene to assist the families. There were three apartments within the structure and all three families were displaced by the fire. It appears the fire was ignited by a water heater in a closet at the rear of the structure. The structure was heavily damaged by the fire and is a total loss.
