Beaumont police chief discusses BISD campus safety

BEAUMONT - By Justin Hinton, KFDM News

Events like the shooting in Connecticut remind the Beaumont Independent School District’s Police Chief Clydell Duncan he can never be too cautious.

“With the climate that we're living in today, with the surplus of weapons. with the number of psychotic behavior that is taking place within the nation, police presence is very important.”

The district’s police department began operation in 2007. Since then, the department has grown to 23 sworn peace officers patrolling all of the district’s campuses.

The police department also uses more than 1,000 security cameras to monitor activity and send crews when necessary.

“For instance, there’s an intruder at one of the schools, dispatch can pull up the monitor and try to identify where the intruder is so when officers respond, they’ll have an easier time of locating them,” Chief Duncan said.

He says the biggest police presence can be found at the high schools, but in emergencies officers can move from one end of the district to another within five to 10 minutes.
