West Brook High School life skills class selling cookies for funds

Every Thursday, students at Westbrook High School show their support for students who don't have the same resources.


For 8 years now, cookie sales have become such a tradition students wish they could sell tehm every day.


"Maybe on Monday or Tuesday or Wednesday or Thursday or Friday or Saturday," Malik Young, a junior at WEstbrook High School said. He's a member of the cookie crew.


The main ingredient, cookies, helps students in the life skills special education program learn independence.


"They're normal in my eyes, and yes, they do have some disabilites, but I don't want them to be treated like everybody else." Stacey Hansard, life skills teacher said.


The class generally sales about 3,000 cookies.


Every Thursday they sell out in just a matter of hours bringing in hundreds of dollars.


"We help with life skills education, what people generally take for granted, going to a resteraunt, ordering from a menu, going shopping. We help provide assistance to kids in here to make sure they have a Christmas," Hansard said.


Raising money to help the students by selling sweetness.


"I want to give them the opportunities that anybody else has and by doing this, they're interacting with their regular ed peers and socailizing." Hansard says.


It's an opportunity to teach the life skills students, what many others take for granted.
