Fire destroys vacant home

HARDIN COUNTY - By Megan Dillard - First responders from half a dozen fire and police departments in Hardin County fought flames that soared dozens of feet into the sky at an abandoned house.

You could feel the heat and hear the crackling of the fire, just feet from Highway 69 in Lumberton, shortly after two this afternoon. The vacant home sits at the Highway 96 Highway 69 split, at the edge of Lumberton. No one has lived in the home for several decades.

KFDM spoke with a Karen Granato, who grew up there. She says her son and a friend were working at the house today, cleaning the area. Granato couldn't immediately get in touch with him after learning the house was on fire, but once she found out he'd left to run an errand, she felt only relief. "The house, I'm not going to worry about that. You worry about your kid. This is my oldest son and I'm just glad that he's okay."

KFDM also spoke with the firefighters on scene. Jim Philp from Lumberton Fire/Rescue lives half a mile away. He said dry weather caused the fire to build quickly. He said a wisp of smoke grew to a black column just moments between getting the call and rushing to the scene. "With the overgrowth in the area, with the dry litter on the forest floor as well as the grass conditions, that and the wind was a very difficult thing for us. The fire had a pretty good start on us though."

Firefighters from Silsbee, Lumberton, Sour Lake, and Pineridge were on scene. No one was hurt in the fire. Investigators are trying to pinpoint the cause. Stay with KFDM and We'll have more on story tonight at ten.
