Nederland man speaks out about I-10 pileup

NEDERLAND - By Justin Hinton, KFDM News

Terrance Williams spent part of Thanksgiving in the hospital after being involved in the 150-car pileup on Interstate 10.

“I don’t even remember getting out of the truck,” he said.

Williams and a co-worker were driving back from Port Aransas after finishing a diving job. As Williams’ co-worker drove down the highway, Williams took a nap.

“When I woke up, I was on the side of the road, I guess waiting on someone to help me,” he said. “Pretty scary when you wake up and you don’t really know what’s going on. You’re kind of in a daze.”

The truck slammed into an 18-wheeler while a pick-up truck slammed into them from behind. Williams says he flew forward, crashing into the windshield.

He said emergency crews transported him to Winnie Community Hospital. There, he received 15 staples and 12 stitches.

Williams called his wife, Sandra Melo, from the hospital but told her not to come.

“I naturally freaked out and told him I’ll be there in a few minutes. He said ‘No, just be calm and stay at home.’ It’s very hard to do when your husband has been in an accident,” she said.

Melo resorted to prayers and the help of a friend to get her through the day.

Williams returned home later that afternoon. He says he doesn’t remember most of what happened during the crash.
