DPS update on 1-10 wreck

JEFFERSON COUNTY - By Megan Dillard - DPS troopers say the main focus today is piecing together evidence from Thursday's pile-up on I-10 near Hamshire Road, which involved more than 100 vehicles.

Two people died in the crash, and several dozen others were treated at hospitals throughout southeast Texas, including Beaumont, Winnie, and Houston.

Sgt. Chuck Havard with DPS told KFDM News troopers will focus on talking with drivers, passengers, and witnesses from yesterday's accident. Havard says recreating the scene as accurately as possible is critical in trying to determine the cause. Havard says the fog was heavy Thursday morning; a fact troopers will concentrate on. He also explained troopers will investigate to determine whether there is any evidence to prove a criminal case, which would result in charges against those responsible. Havard says the investigation should take about ten days.

KFDM also spoke with Mary Poole of Baptist Hospitals of Southeast Texas who confirmed the hospital treated more than 20 patients. Two children and one adult with head injuries were transferred from Baptist Hospital to medical facilities in Houston Thursday. Poole says the Baptist Hospital has treated and released all other patients from the accident.

KFDM also confirmed with Winnie Community Hospital that the five patients from the wreck treated at that location have also been released.

Stay with KFDM and for updates on accident.
