Nederland man leading effort for Texas to secede

A Southeast Texan is one of the most outspoken supporters of Texas seceding from the United States.

Daniel Miller is President of the Texas Nationalist Movement based in Nederland.

He was an advocate of Texas breaking away, long before more than 100,000 people signed an online petition to the White House, calling for Texas to become its own country independent of the U.S.

Miller has been making the rounds on political talk shows calling for Texas to secede.

Miller told KFDM Wednesday, "Frankly, Texas wants to take a path of limited government and protection of personal freedom and unfortunately, what we're finding is a majority of Americans concentrated in several states have a completely opposite philosophy."

Miller says he's been working on this for 10 years. He believes it was the re-election of President Barack Obama that caused the movement to spread across the country. 40 other states now have similar petitions seeking secession.

"Every single year we get stronger. We grow because people are becoming increasingly aware that there is a massive disconnect between many of the states and the federal government," said Miller.

The group's website explains how succession would work and its Facebook page has more than 27,000 fans, but is it just a bunch of radial talk or a real possibility?

"Frankly the issue here about Texas independence is not some kind of hope, wish or dream. It's based on political, cultural and economic realities. It's an inevitability," said Miller.

While the debate rages on, one thing is certain. It's a subject that's caught the attention of Texans from one end of the state to the other.

Miller says the White House petition won't carry very much weight, but on his website he has a petition calling for Texas Governor Rick Perry and the legislature to conduct a non-binding referendum on whether Texas should again become sovereign.

Perry opposes such a move and some legal experts say secession would be unconstitutional because of a U.S. Supreme Court ruling from 1869.
