AAA predicts more than 3 million will travel for Thanksgiving holiday

IRVING, Texas (AP) - A travel group has predicted nearly 3.3 million Texans will hit the road for the Thanksgiving holiday period.

AAA Texas on Monday estimated the number of Texans traveling this holiday week will increase 1.6 percent compared to last year.

Thanksgiving is Thursday. The association defines the holiday travel period as round trips of 50 miles or more from Wednesday through Sunday.

AAA Texas spokeswoman Rhonda Wilson says the predicted increase in holiday travel comes as people feel more confident this year about the economy.

The travel group's recent survey found that most Texas will be driving to their holiday destinations. Half of all travelers intend to shop during the holiday period, especially the Friday after Thanksgiving which is traditionally the busiest shopping day of the year.
