According to State Trooper Eric Dunn, of the Texas Department of Public Safety, the crash occurred shortly after 10:00 on Highway 62 near County Road 828, near the Jasper/Newton County line.
Trooper Dunn said the woman, later identified as 49-year-old Sherry White Meadows, was driving a 2004 Toyota Sequoia sport utility vehicle southbound, while 39-year-old Troy Phillips, of Evergreen, Louisiana, was driving northbound in a fully loaded 1999 Freightliner truck-tractor-semi-trailer, hauling a load of hardwood.
According to Trooper Dunn, a witness told him that Meadows crossed the center line of the highway, and collided head-on with the truck in the northbound lane. The truck came to a stop on the west side of the highway, while the SUV stopped on the east side.
Trooper Dunn said Meadows was ejected from her vehicle. She was flown by medical helicopter from the scene to Christus St. Elizabeth Hospital in Beaumont, where she died a short time later.
Meanwhile, Phillips had minor injuries.
The impact tore a diesel tank from the side of the big-rig, which resulted in diesel fuel being spilled onto the highway. The roadway had to be closed until early Friday afternoon while a hazardous material crew cleaned up the spill.
The accident remains under investigation.
